Building Your Home Apothecary with Bloom and Brew

Building Your Home Apothecary with Bloom and Brew

Most people who come to Bloom and Brew start the same way. They've got a jar of dried chamomile in the cupboard, bought with good intentions, mostly unused. Maybe a bag of dried calendula from a market stall too, and a vague memory of meaning to do something with it. They want to actually know what to do with it all, and with everything else they keep meaning to buy. And they really want to know how to have some control over their health, by gently proviiding their body with the support it needs.

That's really what these workshops are for. A home apothecary isn't about having a beautifully stocked shelf (but oh what witchy goals!). It's about knowing what's on that shelf, why it's there, and how to reach for it when you, your family or close community need it. That's what Bloom & Brew is all about.

So what actually happens on the day?

Every session starts the way most good things do, with tea and a proper hello. We talk about whatever's herbs we are using that day, and discuss the techniques used to get the most from our herbs-  an oxymel, an infused honey, a balm, or a tonic. Then we get stuck in. There's mixing, straining, bottling, a bit of getting messy, plenty of questions along the way, and comparing notes with the person next to you who you've probably just met but who now feels like an old friend. A bit of a co-conspirator, even, in this quietly revolutionary thing of making healing remedies with your own hands.

You leave with jars full of those remedies you made yourself, which is satisfying enough on its own. But the part that sticks is the confidence. Next time you're standing in front of dried herbs at a market, you'll actually know what you're looking at and what you might do with it. Session by session, that's how a proper home apothecary gets built. Not bought all at once, but gathered, properly understood, and used.

We keep it seasonal and local, so what you're learning connects to what's actually growing around you in the Hunter region right now. Slow, small batch herbalism, the kind that's been passed around kitchen tables for generations.

Reclaiming herbal wisdom

Here's the part I think matters most. Herbal knowledge isn't guesswork. It's generations of tradition, refined and passed down. People used to make their own remedies as a matter of course, reaching for what grew nearby and what had worked for their mother and grandmother before them. Somewhere along the way, that everyday knowledge got quietly handed over to professionals, and people started to feel like they'd need a clinic just to access it. While this is absolutely true for many healing treatments there is a whole lot we can reclaim and use in our homes!

Every session, I watch people reconnect with that. Someone who's never made anything from scratch ends up bottling a very useful tonic with steady hands and a proud little smile.

Someone else mentions, almost in passing, a remedy their family used for years, and suddenly the whole table is leaning in to hear more. We will often corroborate these remedies and discuss the evedence behind them. That's the real value of these afternoons, not just what ends up in the jar, but what gets shared around the table while it's being made.

When you make something yourself, from herbs you understand and traditional methods that have been trusted for generations, you're building a real, useful skill, not just having a nice afternoon. That's what we're really doing here, one workshop at a time. Not just a home apothecary, but the know-how to make and reach for your own remedies for life's everyday moments, rather than defaulting to the chemist for every small thing.

The details

Herb Circle, our monthly Bloom and Brew sessions, run on the second Tuesday of the month from August through December 2026 at the Toronto Community Hub. You can come along to a single session for $40, or book the full series for $150 if you know you'll want to keep coming back and keep building on what you learn each time.

Spots are limited, since we keep the group small enough that everyone actually gets their hands on the herbs and their questions answered. If your shelf, or your confidence, has been waiting for some purpose, we would love to help you get there. You'll find upcoming dates listed here, or feel free to message me directly if you've got questions.
