Herbalism for Modern Families: Simple Ways to Involve Kids in Plant Wisdom
Share
There’s something truly special about watching little hands reach for a jar of dried herbs with curiosity in their eyes. For me, herbalism isn't just about tinctures and teas — it's a way of life. A rhythm. A connection. And it's something I love sharing with my children.
In today’s fast-paced world, returning to slow, seasonal herbal wisdom can be a powerful form of natural parenting. Kids are innately drawn to nature. Herbs offer them the chance to engage their senses, ask questions, and build a relationship with their own wellbeing.
Here are a few simple ways I’ve found to weave herbs into everyday family life:
Let Them Help Brew the Tea
Herbal tea rituals are a lovely, low-stakes way to involve kids. My little ones enjoy scooping out the tea blend, watching the herbs swirl in hot water, and smelling each new plant. Our Calm Tea is a great family-friendly blend, with Chamomile, Lavender and Passionflower — all safe, nourishing herbs that calm minds and sleep.
Grow a “Kids’ Herb Garden”
You don’t need much space — a few pots on the patio will do. Let them choose easy herbs like rosemary, mint, lemon balm, or calendula. Watching these plants grow from seed to medicine (in food, tea or ointments) gives them a sense of wonder and ownership. Plus, dirt under fingernails is a sign of a good day, in my book.
Bonus: Free Herbal Colouring Sheet!
To help little ones learn plant names and shapes, I've linked to a free printable Herbal Colouring Book from Learning Herbs featuring kid-friendly herbs like plantain, Marshmallow, and Violet. It's a quiet afternoon activity that brings a little herbal wisdom to the craft table.
Sharing herbalism with children doesn’t have to mean formal lessons or complicated remedies. It’s in the small, everyday things — the tea before bed, herbal ointment for owies, the garden we tend together.
These are the memories that stick. These are the roots we grow.
